monkey island 2 cryengine fun September 21, 2009

Ever wanted to know what a classic 2D adventure game might look like when it get's the uber 3D "fancy pants" treatment and still stays true to the original art source? You're welcome :-)
Finally, I have a reason to buy Crysis.

Warcraft, by the numbers September 18, 2009

A huge group, they have data centers from Texas to Seoul, and monitor over 13,250 server blades, 75,000 cpu cores, and 112.5 terabytes of blade RAM. He points out the picture of the GNOC in their slideshow, a data core that even has televisions tuned to the weather stations. They use those to ensure that conditions of the data center are up to their standards; with only a staff of 68 people they ensure connectivity across the globe for the numerous WoW servers.
Yet they still can't get patch days to go smoothly.

Project Natal Demoed on Late Night June 11, 2009

Kudo Tsunoda, Jimmy Fallen and his guests John Krasinski (”The Office”) and Stephen Moyer ("True Blood") all play a little of the 3D Breakout/dodge ball game that was shown off during the Microsoft E3 Press conference. I'm impressed at how fast Natal can distinguish them.

I suddenly like EA a little more June 4, 2009

After seeing gamers' anticipation for Brutal Legend, Activision-Blizzard realized the mistake they made dropping the publishing rights for the game. Now they're suing to get a piece of the pie. An EA rep had a great analogy for the situation:
like a husband abandoning his family and then suing after his wife meets a better looking guy.

Guantanamo Game put on Hold June 3, 2009

From T-Enterprise director Zarrar Chishti:

Unfortunately, much of the speculation regarding the game itself made by various publications and websites has been inaccurate and ill informed... [The game] was never designed to be “propaganda” or “a recruiting tool for terrorism”. Neither was it designed to glamorize terrorism as has been reported. [...] However, as a direct result of the extreme reaction that the game and its popular misconceptions have provoked, T-Enterprise has decided to pull out of the project and will not be completing Rendition: Guantanamo.

No. You had negative press because your game looked like complete shit, with graphics from the early 90s. I would certainly love to play a game that you described. Not the the trash I saw in the trailer.

Welcome Back EGM May 29, 2009

From the press release:
Steve Harris, founder of “Electronic Gaming Monthly” magazine, announced today that he has entered into an agreement with Ziff Davis Media to re-acquire certain assets, including trademarks and publishing rights, with plans to re-launch EGM in the second half of 2009.
I've always been a fan of Electronic Gaming Monthly. When I was a kid, I remember always going to the grocery store with my mom just so I could get the latest issue. Even with all he talk of the so called "death of print", I still believe there's a place for magazines like EGM, and if done right it'll survive, even thrive. Look for EGM in the later half of 2009, and more details at this years E3.

Starcraft 2 Beta Confirmed for Summer 2009 May 28, 2009

Community Manager Karune posts
Summer - which is the next season of the year. That is pretty close in my opinion :)

Zero Punctuation Reviews Duke Nukem Forever May 27, 2009

Such astounding depth and complexity that every previous conventionally good game shrivels below its mightiness like its a cold day in the lockerroom. Duke Nukem is a genre defining masterpiece...

NCsoft Leaves ESA December 8, 2008

NC Interactive, the American branch of NCSoft, apparently chose not to renew its relationship with game lobbyist ESA.
Departing the ESA is likely a cost-cutting measure for NC, which also chose not to exhibit at E3 this year. Game publishers pay significant fees to belong to the organization. While no announcement was made by either NC Interactive or the ESA, the trade association's membership page no longer lists NC among its ranks.
NC is just the latest developer to jump the ESA ship, following Vivendi, Activision, LucasArts and several others. Update: NCsoft made an official statement today:
While we appreciate what the ESA does for our industry, we can confirm that NCsoft has elected not to keep membership with the ESA for 2009. This decision was not financially motivated, as indicated in your story. There have been many changes in the gaming industry over the past couple of years and, like other developers and publishers, we have decided to wait to see how related industry events and organizations further develop before rejoining. We will be reviewing our membership status on an annual basis.

Microsoft to "break the bank" for E3 '09 December 8, 2008

"There’s a lot of stuff on the docket, and maybe we’ll break the bank a little bit and talk about things that are further out, which will hopefully get the community excited," added Spencer.
E3 may very be returning to the glory of pre-2007.

I'll Be Home in 10 Days December 7, 2008

To try Home, which is slated for release in the next 10 days, players must download a piece of free software from Sony’s PlayStation store onto their own PS3.
Says the Times (online) a UK based news site. Sony, as usual, has no comment on this. Sounds false, but no harm in waiting until then.

Play the Resident Evil 5 Demo Right Now December 5, 2008

The long-awaited Resident Evil 5 demo has finally gone live across the ocean onto the Japanese Xbox LIVE Marketplace; thankfully PlanetXbox360 found directions to help all of our readers (no matter where you live) get in there and download it.
I've just tried this myself, and can confirm it's working. Further more, it can in fact be downloaded without a Gold account. This is for Xbox users only. No word on a PS3 demo...yet. Update: The demo is playable and appears to be entirely (except for the title in the games list)  in english.

Nintendo is Taking the N Word Back, Yo

Earlier this week several game review sites received pre-owned copies (14 in all) of 2005's Animal Crossing: Wild World for the DS to show off some of the migration options the newly released Animal Crossing: City Folk uses. Yesterday both MTV Multiplayer and Kotaku noticed some unusual  conversations showing up in the game. Nintendo was quick to issue a statement to this screw-up:
Previously played copies of the 2005 DS game Animal Crossing: Wild World were sent to 14 members of the media to demonstrate the ability of players to transfer items to the new Animal Crossing: City Folk for Wii. We regret that an offensive phrase was included without our knowledge via a wireless function that allows user-generated catchphrases to spread virally from one game to the next. This version is limited to 14 copies created for media review purposes only and is not available at retailers. We sincerely apologize for the incident and are working with media who received the game cards to return them to Nintendo immediately.
The question still remains; if these were 14 internal copies, not available to the general public, who was the genius at Nintendo that did this, and how did no one catch this before they were sent out? Nintendo later went on to say this misunderstanding was all cool though: both the cartridges and the DS handhelds the games were played on were also black.

Ken Levine Likes PC Gaming December 4, 2008

Like him or hate him, 2K Boston head Ken Levine (Bioshock) did a recent interview with Forbes.com
I wish the industry could find a way to make PC gaming more broadly successful. There are so many challenges for PC gaming--the complications from systems specifications to the drivers--most people look at PC games and say, "What are you talking about?" It's a shame because as a gamer, I am never more comfortable than I am sitting with a mouse and keyboard two inches away from my monitor.
What's interesting is he doesn't mention piracy as being a factor of the death of PC gaming. At all. Not one mention of of it through the entire interview. He's spot on with the real problem, but doesn't suggest a solution. For that matter, hardly anyone is addressing it. Everyone is talking about tthe shrinking PC gaming market, but no one has any idea on how to fix it. There are attempts like the PC Gaming Alliance which helps solve the hardware issues, but not the software problems like software drivers Levine mentions (or just plain bad coding...Gears of War on the PC, I'm looking at you). Maybe the PC is just doomed to live out it's days serving the MMO and indie gamers.

Jadedgamer.net

A couple weeks ago I had gotten an idea to seperate my rants and ramblings from actual articles and reviews I typically post on underlost. I didn't like to post there as often as I'd like to as I felt I was cluttering up the site. I want to keep Underlost as sort of a central hub for all my projects, and less of an actual blog. Jaded Gamer is the end result. Reviews and longer articles will still stay over there. This site will just serve as a place for me to post my two cents. So sit back, and enjoy my thoughts and ramblings on the latest game industry news, and just about anything else I come across.

The US Army Heads to Second Life December 3, 2008

Gen. William S. Wallace:
one of the age groups of which there’s about four million young people that routinely interface in Second Life is the age group of the young people who we’re trying to encourage to join the military.
Really? Second Life users? Second Life users are really your target audience? Is the US Army that desperate? Apparently so. Or maybe they just have some drug trials involving anthropomorphic creatures and are in need of test subjects.

Tiberium Field Depleted September 30, 2008

It appears EA's Tiberium, a First person shooter set in the Command & Conquer universe, has just been canceled, says EA's Mike Verdu.
It is with a heavy heart that I announce the end to all work on 'Tiberium,' effective immediately
Verdu also states "The game had fundamental design challenges from the start". It's a shame. from the previews, the game actually looked pretty promising. Now the question is, if the game is canceled, then what's the beta key included with Red Alert 3 for?

Unreal T3 Mac/Linux Still in the Works September 22, 2008

Unreal Tournament 3: Seriously, there's no conspiracy. ...so stop sending me email suggesting that Microsoft is paying to block this.
It's been close to a year now since Unreal Tournament 3 was released. With it's mediocre reviews, I just assumed the Mac and Linux versions were dead. Good to know they are still alive.
